Perforator Designed for Red Bull South Africa

Solans Engineering is proud to showcase the Perforator, a custom engineered solution designed for Red Bull South Africa. This project began with a complex product security issue that required a reliable and fast industrial solution. Red Bull faced a challenge with cans that had incorrect labels or production defects. These cans could not be sent to landfill, as they risked entering the black market. Because Red Bull products are valuable and widely recognised, the brand needed a system that guaranteed complete product destruction while still supporting responsible recycling practices. Solans Engineering was appointed to design and manufacture a machine that would eliminate this risk and ensure safe material recovery.

Why Red Bull Needed a Custom Engineered Solution

The task required a dependable, easy to operate and contamination safe system that worked at industrial scale. The Perforator was engineered to puncture each can in several places, allowing all liquid contents to drain before recycling. From the outset, our engineering team focused on creating a machine that could handle large volumes efficiently while maintaining the highest safety standards. The result was a robust and high performing unit that delivered exceptional reliability.

How the Perforator Works

The design featured a reinforced hopper, a perforation chamber and a controlled drainage system. Cans were fed into the hopper, passed into the perforation section and were punctured in several key points. This process released all fluids quickly, leaving clean aluminium suitable for recycling. Because the process was mechanical, the machine had fewer points of failure and required minimal specialised maintenance.

A Focus on Product Security

One of the core goals was to ensure that no intact cans could leave the process. Red Bull needed full confidence that product destruction was guaranteed. The perforation system was therefore designed to operate with consistent force and precision. Every can was rendered unusable, and the system delivered repeatable results at scale.

Efficient Liquid Drainage System

A critical part of the engineering was the liquid management process. The drainage system channelled the removed fluids into a secure collection point, preventing contamination and supporting hygienic workplace operations. Clean, dry aluminium then moved forward to the recycling stage.

Recycling Value That Exceeded the Cost of the Machine

One of the most surprising outcomes of this project was the financial return generated through aluminium recycling. Once the perforated cans were sent for recycling, Red Bull received payment for the recovered metal. Over time, the value of the recycled aluminium exceeded the cost of designing and building the Perforator. This transformed a compliance issue into a cost positive environmental solution.

Operational Benefits for Red Bull

Beyond its primary purpose, the Perforator improved workflow safety and efficiency within Red Bull’s facility. Staff could operate the machine with minimal training, and the easy access panels allowed for quick cleaning and routine checks. The mechanical design reduced downtime, making the unit a dependable long term asset in their waste management process.

A Successful Engineering Partnership

Solans Engineering delivered the entire project from initial concept through to final installation. Throughout the development process, we worked closely with Red Bull to ensure the Perforator met their operational requirements and long term sustainability goals. The final result demonstrated how effective engineering can solve specialist challenges while also improving financial and environmental performance.
